It comes with water-resistance and more OS updates (3 additional years). But the 7 brings better battery life and more internal storage (128GB vs. 64GB).

The iPhone XR also has a cleaner user interface and wireless charging. But the 7 also adds an AMOLED, larger (+0.3') display, and more RAM (6GB vs. 3GB).
But how much more will I have to pay for the 7?

Is the iPhone XR still worth getting in 2021?
The iPhone XR is holding up pretty well in 2021, and while it isn't the best device out there, at least it's more affordable now. That doesn't mean you should ignore other devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE since it has better performance, better battery life, more storage, faster charging, more RAM, better display, reverse charging, and external storage.
Is the 7 still worth getting in 2021?

As for performance, Geekbench 5 (IOS)(Android) scores the 7 2% ahead of its competitor in the multi-core ranking. All in all, there's not much of a difference between the two. Remember that iOS does run smoother than Android on equivalent hardware because Apple did their work to keep it fit.

One peculiarity that the iPhone XR has over almost all of its competitors: Its pixel density evens out at 22% below the rest.

I don't see a meaningful winner in the camera department.
About the iPhone XR: DXOMARK has rated this camera with a score of 112. If you also consider its digital zoom abilities, you'll end up with a score of 116**. If you click here, you can check what they think of it.
I hope this helps: 97% of its rivals can record videos in 4K or more, and all have an ultra-wide-angle lens.
About the 7: I was curious about what DXOMARK had to say about this camera. They didn't review it yet, but I'd give it around 115* points, based on what we know about this shooter. And if we consider its digital zoom abilities, that score goes up to 124**.
Lastly, all of its rivals can record videos in 4 or 8K and have an ultra-wide-angle lens.
One can place the 7 as a lower high-end.
If you take optical zoom seriously, you should consider other options like the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE or the Oppo Find X2 Neo.
*I do recommend DXOMARK's reviews. Unfortunately, there are lots of good cameras left out of their labs. So when I get my hands on one of them, I consider every camera spec and give an approximated score. As of now, you can expect a borderline margin of error of 2 points.

The iPhone XR does win some points here, mainly for its number of color options and water resistance.
The iPhone XR is 12 g. (0.42 oz) heavier than the other, weighing about 182 g. (6.42 oz). But because screen size also matters, the iPhone XR has a 'weight to screen size' score of 3.3, and that's another way of saying it's kind of weighty for its screen size. The 7, however, has 5.6, so nothing to state here.

At 2942 mAh, the iPhone XR is the owner of the smallest battery, while the 7 features 3700 mAh. And GSMArena did test them out, and the 7 does have an advantage here.

Definitely, the 7.
The iPhone XR features 64GB of internal storage and 3GB of RAM. I should also mention that most rivals deliver more RAM and more storage. Right now, the average is 109Gb of storage and 6GB of RAM.

If you got used to counting on the good-old 3.5mm headphone jack, forget about it. Just skip adapters and get a decent pair of wireless earbuds. You can have it anyway if you don't care that much about them. Either the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro Max or the Samsung Galaxy A52 can give you a headphone jack.

After tallying up all the scores, it clearly has a lot more to offer than its competitor. It is hard to enumerate something when the 7 seems to stand out in every category.
That doesn't mean the iPhone XR is a 'crazy' choice. In this case, you're paying for the brand, the updates, the ecosystem, and probably the looks too. You'll also get way more money back if you decide to sell it in the future.
