As you try to connect, it will rank each spot, from green to red, to let you know how strong that network is. You can even download an offline version if you’re unable to connect to the app while on the go.

It does offer free hotspots as well, but I found the selection to not be as strong as the others I mentioned prior. Again, it’s one to consider if you’re looking for certain WiFi passwords.

Other Ways to Get Free WiFi Without a Router

That’s fine as you can use your Facebook app, if you have it downloaded, to find free WiFi as well.

To do so, open your app, click on the menu and then “see more” to find the “Find Wi-Fi” tab.

In clicking on this, you will have to give Facebook permission to access your current location, but once you do, you can then see all of the public WiFi hotspots in your area.

Check With Your Cable Company

Many of your popular cable companies, such as Cox and Xfinity, offer thousands of hotspots throughout the city. To know for certain, talk with your cable company or simply visit their website for more information.

And, if your company does offer free hotspots, you can find them in a quick search on the Google Play or App Store can yield some results. For example, I use Cox Communications and the official Cox app can help me find local hotspots throughout the United States.

Now, don’t think you can only use these hotspots in your vicinity as this often isn’t the case. Many of your cable companies, no matter how big they are, offer hundreds of thousands of hotspots located throughout the United States.

Consider Sharing Your Cellphone Connection

As a fair warning, I only recommend this option if you have a cellphone plan and you have access to unlimited data. The unlimited data plan isn’t required, but it will help you avoid any overages.

If you have a smartphone with a mobile plan, you can turn your phone into a wireless router, allowing devices nearby to connect just as you would your router in your home.

To do so, it’s very easy, and I will walk you through the steps below.

For Android

• Go to “settings”
• Tap on “connections”
• Turn “mobile hotspot” on

In some cases, you may not be able to do so based on your plan. So, if you’re denied, then you may want to check your service agreement and/or contact your cellphone carrier to see what plans are eligible.

In the case, you can set up a hotspot, then you will be prompted to create an SSID as well as a password. Once active, you can then open your WiFi on any device and be able to connect your phone router, allowing you to surf the web at 4G/5G speeds.

For iOS

• Go to “settings”
• Click on “cellular”
• Click “personal hotspot” to slide it on

Like the Android devices, the same can be said about this process as well. If you’re allowed to turn your phone into a hotspot, then you will be asked to create a SSID and password.

Regardless of which phone you have, if you consider doing this, always make sure you choose a strong password and highly consider plugging your phone in as your battery will drain much faster than average.

Don’t Forget the Obvious Places

Many places, no matter where you are in the world, offer free WiFi free of charge. If you don’t want to download the apps I mentioned earlier, then you may want to just try the obvious locations.

This can include…

• Burger King
• Denny’s
• Dunkin Donuts
• a grocery store, such as Whole Foods, Kroger or Safeway
• hospital
• hotel (some require a password)
• Lowe’s
• Malls
• McDonald’s
• Panera Bread
• Starbucks or just about any coffee shop
• Taco Bell
• Truck Stop
• Wendy’s
• …or even the library (In some cases, you may need a library card, but this is 100% free as long as you’re a resident. Not all require it, however.)

Also, depending on where you travel, some cities even offer free WiFi for all visitors in its plazas and/or tourist attractions. These locations vary in offerings, so I do recommend you at least do your research before visiting.

Be Safe on Public WiFi

While free WiFi is always great, let it be known that connecting to a public hotspot can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

For starters, hackers can create a fake network, allowing them to intercept your device and then steal any sensitive data you may choose to access in your surfing. They can even force malware without you even knowing about it.

To keep safe, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Always use a very strong password if you plan on creating your own hotspot. Don’t use anything obvious

Before connecting, use one of the apps mentioned above to check the ratings. If you see a lot of good ratings, it should be safe, but it isn’t a guarantee.

While the auto connect feature is nice, it’s best to turn it off so that it doesn’t accidentally connect you to a malicious network.

Before downloading any free WiFi app, always refer to the privacy policy to see what they plan on doing with your information. Many apps will know a lot about you, such as your location data, IP address, SSID and much more. If you don’t want to share your information, be sure you carefully read the privacy policies before downloading it.

Try to avoid sensitive data. This can include logging into a bank account or checking emails. However, if you take the appropriate steps, you can still protect yourself, even while on a public network.

Turn off public sharing so that no one around can gain access to your computer.

No matter where you live, there’s free WiFi just about anywhere.

Now, I don’t have the secrets to get it inside your house if you’re not near a popular space, but if you don’t mind traveling a few miles, it’s almost certain you can get free WiFi unless you live in the middle of the woods.

While the FreedomPop method can work temporarily, it only offers 200 MB for free, but it’s one of the only options inside your home. This won’t get you much, but remember, you can check out this post for more free internet inside your home.

For that reason, I highly recommend you download one of the many free WiFi apps I mentioned and explore your town to see which area offers the best signal and service. Once you do so, you should have access for as long as the signal is active. Again, you do need to travel most of the time, but in many cases, this could be cheaper than an internet bill, even after paying for gas.

Several types of wireless adapters can detect wireless networks, and there are also website directories dedicated to locating free WiFi® hotspots in any given area around the world.

When possible, locate hotspots before leaving home. You can check one or more websites that host hotspot directories. Enter local area information (address or zip code) to see results. Most sites allow you to set an allowable search range, such as looking for free WiFi® areas “within one mile” (1.61 km) of the target area. Results display as hyperlinked names of each establishment. Clicking on a result will take you to a page with the address, phone number, and a road map. Details about the type of network (e.g. standard 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n) are also commonly provided.

If planning a vacation or business trip, search for free WiFi® hotspots in advance by entering the zip code of the location you’ll be visiting. It’s always a good idea to have backup hotspots in case the one you plan to use is down for any reason.

While directories make every attempt to be accurate, businesses come and go, ownership or management changes, and networks get upgraded or changed from one standard to another, for instance, or from a free hotspot to a pay-for-service. If access will be critical, call establishments you plan to use ahead of time to verify that free WiFi® hotspots are available. If your internal network card can only connect to a single protocol, such as 802.11g, be sure to ask if the network is broadcast in the protocol your card supports.

Planning ahead is nice but not always possible. If you find yourself in the city with need of ad-hoc access, you have some options. Cruising through commercial areas with a WiFi® finder can be a big help.

A WiFi® finder is a radio frequency (RF) device that scans the airwaves looking for WiFi® broadcasts, some models flashing graduating LED lights to lead the user towards greater signal strength. If you don’t own a WiFi® finder and have not scouted free WiFi® areas ahead of time, upscale coffee shops like Starbucks® are often wired and easy to find, as are many large bookstore chains that include coffee counters. Airports and hotels are other possible sources for online access. If needed, consult a phone book at a pay phone for the nearest places most likely to have free WiFi® hotspots. Online access might be noted in the advertisements for some of these businesses. The municipality itself might provide a free wireless access point near the civic center, library or other city building. If your need arises during business hours, call city services to ask.
